machine serging

Machine serging is a process that uses a special type of sewing machine to stitch a tightly-wrapped thread around the edges of a carpet, creating a finished edge 9.5 to 13 millemetres wide that prevents unraveling and fraying.

This type of finishing is often used on styles made from natural fibres such as wool or cotton, which are more prone to unraveling than synthetic fibres. The neat, tidy edge is resistant to wear and tear, making it an ideal finish for high-traffic areas or rooms with heavy furniture. Serging thread can match the colour of the carpet for a more subtle take, or contrast for a more decorative look.

machine binding

Machine binding is the process of sewing a narrow binding on the edge of a carpet to prevent fraying and add durability. The finished edge is usually 6 to 10 millimetres in width and is designed to be subtle to not detract from the carpet’s overall appearance.

The binding can be made of a variety of materials including cotton, wool, or synthetic fibres, and can be matched to the colour of the carpet or contrasted for a decorative effect. This is one of our most basic finishes and is suitable for most carpet styles and room settings.

wide binding

Wide binding is a finishing technique that involves the application of a wide strip of fabric around the edges of a rug. The fabric is sewn in place using a specialised machine and the corners are then mitered, which involves cutting the fabric at a 45-degree angle and folding it in for a clean, polished corner and durable finish.

The fabric strip is typically made of cotton, polyester, or a blend of both and is available in a range of colours and patterns to match the rug. The width of the binding strip can vary depending on the desired look but is typically between 3cm to 8cm. Area rugs finished with wide binding and mitered corners are commonly used in high-traffic areas such as entryways, hallways, or living rooms, where they provide a durable and long-lasting finish that can withstand wear and tear over time. This type of finishing technique can be used on a variety of rug materials, including wool, silk, and natural fibres.

hand serging

Hand serging is the process of sewing yarns around the edge of a carpet by hand instead of by machine. It involves wrapping a thread tightly around the edges using a needle and thread to create a neat and durable edge approximately 9 to 12mm in width. It is a meticulous and time-consuming process that requires a skilled artisan to achieve a uniform and attractive finish.

This technique is often used on styles made from natural fibres such as wool or silk, which can be more delicate and prone to fraying than synthetic materials. It is also ideal for styles with a thicker pile that may not be suitable for a machine. The thread used for hand serging can be matched to the colour of the rug for a subtle effect, or it can be a contrasting colour to create a decorative border.

ORGANIC SERGING

Organic serging is a unique machine finishing process that twists multiple wool yarn colours to make a sophisticated edge that mimics hand serging. This technique Is currently only available to blend wool yarns.

The machine will give the rug a low profile finish, approximately 9mm wide, while still guaranteeing the yarn will hold the edge and prevent unravelling. This beautiful edge finishes the carpet with a hand serged look in a faster timeline and lower price point.
